Acupuncture For Smoking Cessation
If you, or someone you know, are struggling with an addiction to nicotine (smoking or smokeless), acupuncture can help. The initial studies done with this 2-treatment stop- smoking protocol resulted in an 80-85% success rate. Acupuncture helps to overcome the physical addiction to nicotine and to significantly reduce or eliminate the cravings and stress that are associated with the withdrawal process.
The procedure includes a minimum of two acupuncture treatments on consecutive days. The first treatment will reduce the withdrawal symptoms to a tolerable or insignificant level. It is very important that there is no smoking after this 1st session or the entire 2-treatment process with have to start over. After the second treatment, there is usually minimal craving or other symptoms of withdrawal.
Many people do fine with just 2 treatments. For those who are experiencing more stress in their lives, an additional 1-3 booster treatments may be necessary, especially if smoking has been a coping mechanism for emotional or other stresses. These boosters can be either acupuncture or EFT, which is an acupressure technique, which you can also do at home, to relieve stress and cravings. The booster treatments will further lower the stress level and thus lessen any residual cravings for nicotine.
We are very committed to supporting your decision to stop smoking and to lead a healthier lifestyle. For this reason, our policy is that if you find that a booster is necessary, just call us and we will do our best to get you in for a treatment that same day. You can also discuss with your acupuncturist whether your personal lifestyle or stress level potentially warrant additional booster sessions.
Following are several tips which can help to make your decision to stop smoking more successful:
- Reduce your caffeine intake – excess caffeine (coffee, tea, sodas) makes it harder to quit.
- Get some form of exercise to reduce stress.
- Deep/abdominal breathing is also helpful to reduce stress.
- Exercise your willpower. Start thinking about all the reasons why you want to quit smoking. It is good to repeat a positive affirmation such as “Everyday I am becoming healthier and healthier”, or “I am strong, healthy and happy”. Make up your own that fits your personal desired goals.
